9/22/09  The ACS Office of Local Section Activities has posted a teleconference entitled ACS Local Sections Helping the Unemployed.  In this teleconference, ACS Local Section leaders as well as ACS staff discuss what local sections can do to help chemists that have recently lost their jobs or those that are in a career transition.

9/3/09  Councilor Rich Lomneth has provided a summary of his notes from the national ACS meeting in Washington, D.C. in Fall 2009.  There is also a summary of the meeting in the form of Councilor’s Talking Points provided by the ACS.

7/14/09  Local Sections Helping the Unemployed   Please mark your calendar for Thursday, July 30, 1:00-2:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) for our webinar on:  Local Sections Helping the Unemployed. This program is hosted by the ACS Committee on Local Section Activities (LSAC), Committee on Economic & Professional Affairs (CEPA), and the Leadership Advisory Board (LAB).   
  
The speakers will include representatives from local sections who will discuss their successful events that were held to help ACS members with their career and professional development. In addition, the ACS Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs and the ACS Leadership Advisory Board will discuss the resources that they have available to assist you with planning events for your section’s membership.

11/5/08  The Chemistry Department at Creighton University  is pleased to invite the ACS community and friends to the 13th year of our musical chemistry show.  This hour-long series of science demonstrations set to music will be held Wednesday, November 12, from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Creighton’s campus in Rigge Science Auditorium Room 120.  There is no admission charged for this event that is sponsored by the Omaha Section in celebration of National Chemistry Week.  Chemistry “goodie” bags will be distributed. 

9/29/08  ACS Presidential Debate  On September 28, ACS candidates for president-elect 2009 participated in an ACS Presidential Debate. The debate was recorded and interested members can hear the two candidates, Joseph Francisco and Joseh Michl, discuss their visions for the future of the society and their candidacy for the post.  The debate took place via "Science Studio" a long-running radio show featuring interviews with practicing scientists. Keith Pannell of the department of chemistry at the University of Texas, El Paso, hosted the debate. The recording of the debate can be accessed at www.sciencestudio.org  and www.ktep.org.


9/10/08  Councilor Rich Lomneth has provided a summary of his notes from the national ACS meeting in Philadelphia in Fall 2008.  The notes include information about finances, professional employment guidelines, the formation of a new division, a special discussion on sustainability, and other committee reports.


6/27/08  Councilor Rich Lomneth has provided a summary of his notes from the national ACS meeting in New Orleans in Spring 2008.  The notes include information about the ACS President Elect for 2009, changes to ACS membership (including student membership), and other miscellaneous announcements.


3/25/08  The Laboratory Safety Institute is offering a short course in laboratory safety on April 29–30, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Technology Park in Lincoln.  More information and a registration form is available on this .pdf file.


11/13/07  The Omaha Section of the American Chemical Society will be hosting the 2012 Midwest Regional ACS Meeting in Omaha!  Watch the MWR Meeting page for further announcements and updates.


9/09/07  Councilor Rich Lomneth has provided a summary of his notes from the national ACS meeting in Boston during August 2007.  The notes include important information from the council meetings along with additional observations made throughout the meeting.  Some of the items were copied directly from the summary “Councilor Talking Points” sent to councilors after the meeting. 


4/28/07  High School Teachers!  The Omaha Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is offering to sponsor a local high school teacher to attend the spring national ACS meeting in New Orleans from April 6-10, 2008.  Click here to read more and find out how to apply!


3/23/07  Congratulations to David Hamilton, Dr. Herbert Quigley and Dr. David Gambal:  David Hamilton is celebrating 60 years of ACS service, and Drs. Quigley and Gambal are celebrating 50 years of service.


1/08/07   Awards Program for Teaching High School Science

In the Spring of 2005 the Division of Chemical Education launched a drive to establish an awards program to recognize excellence in the teaching of high school science. To date, a sum of $238,000 has been contributed to the endowment for support of the ACS Division of Chemical Education Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching. We strive to reach the final goal of $300,000 by early 2007, when the awards program will commence.

9/19/06   Amy Melvin of Burke High School was the winner of the 2006 Omaha Section American Chemical Society Award for Teacher Excellence. She was awarded a one year membership in ACS and up to $600 to help pay for attendance at the 233rd ACS National Meeting in Chicago March 25-29, 2007.
